Stage 1 of 6

The controls on a handheld are jobs, not decorations. Power runs the radio. Volume is how loud the speaker is. The big number is the frequency it is set to.

Frequency selection, volume, squelch, simplex operation, memories, and basic radio controls.
NOT STARTED
Work through the six stages. Try the controls. Nothing here receives or transmits a real radio signal.
Stage 1 of 6
The controls on a handheld are jobs, not decorations. Power runs the radio. Volume is how loud the speaker is. The big number is the frequency it is set to.
Stage 2 of 6
Squelch closes the speaker when nothing is stronger than its setting. It does not make a weak signal clearer. A VFO is the frequency you are tuning freely. A memory is a saved frequency you can recall.
Stage 3 of 6
Operate the radio for each step. The checklist counts only what the controls actually do.
Stage 4 of 6
What is the difference between changing volume and changing squelch?
Stage 5 of 6
RADIO LAB PRACTICE. These questions are about the handheld you just used. They are not official exam questions.
Stage 6 of 6
You are at a trailhead for a later hilltop outing. Your friend says, "We're using 146.520 MHz simplex." Set this handheld so you could listen on that frequency. No relay is involved.
