Antennas & SWR

Frequency, wavelength, antenna length, resonance, SWR, and troubleshooting.

Lab workspace

Work through the six stages. Try the controls. Nothing here receives or transmits a real radio signal.

Stage 1 of 6

LEARN

The antenna is part of the radio system. A wire that fits one frequency is a different fraction of the wave at another frequency.

Stage 2 of 6

SEE IT

Forward energy goes toward the antenna. Reflected energy is what this model sends back when the match is poor. SWR is an indicator of that match, not a universal safe limit.

Stage 3 of 6

DO IT

Use the antenna bench. The length readout tells you if the wire is long, short, or near the size you selected.

Stage 4 of 6

EXPLAIN IT

Why might an antenna that works well at one frequency perform poorly at a very different frequency?

Stage 5 of 6

EXAM CONNECTION

RADIO LAB PRACTICE. These questions are about the antenna model you just used. They are not official exam questions.

Stage 6 of 6

FIELD TASK

You are preparing a portable 2-meter station near 146 MHz. No product names. Use the wavelength comparison and the placement sketch. Pick a wire and a place for it.
