Lab workspace

Work through the six stages. Try the controls. Nothing here receives or transmits a real radio signal.

Stage 1 of 6

LEARN

Hearing a station is not a simple matter of more power. On VHF and UHF, this course starts with line of sight: terrain and antenna height can open or block the path.

Stage 2 of 6

SEE IT

A ridge can stay in the way no matter how much transmitter power you add. A repeater can relay. HF can reach past the horizon when the ionosphere returns a signal, and that return is not guaranteed.

Stage 3 of 6

DO IT

Use the path drawing. The label is the result of this model, not a coverage prediction.

Stage 4 of 6

EXPLAIN IT

Why can antenna location sometimes improve communication more than simply increasing transmitter power?

Stage 5 of 6

EXAM CONNECTION

RADIO LAB PRACTICE. These questions are about the path model you just used. They are not official exam questions.

Stage 6 of 6

FIELD TASK

You are on a summit. A friend is in the valley, with a hill on the direct path. Another station is beyond a ridge. Use the drawing. Open the valley path, then the ridge path. More power is not the strategy.
