Operating on the Air

Listening, calling, identifying, simplex, repeaters, and a first courteous contact.

NOT STARTED

Lab workspace

Work through the six stages. This is Technician Core, built on Foundations. Finishing the lab does not mean the idea is mastered, and it is not Technician exam readiness.

Stage 1 of 6

LEARN

A contact starts with listening. Foundations Lab 02 is the radio. Lab 03 is the repeater. This lab is the order of the actions. No microphone is required.

Stage 2 of 6

SEE IT

Set the handheld the way Lab 02 taught, spell a call sign with phonetics, then set microphone gain and look at two filter widths.

Stage 3 of 6

DO IT

A repeater contact, then a net that asks you to wait, then a test. QSY in the hint means change frequency. You do not need a list of Q-signals.

Stage 4 of 6

EXPLAIN IT

Why should you listen before transmitting on a frequency?

Stage 5 of 6

EXAM CONNECTION

RADIO LAB PRACTICE. These questions are about the contacts you just made. They are not official exam questions.

Stage 6 of 6

FIELD TASK

You are at a trailhead. Make one basic contact. Listen before you call.
