How Radio Waves Travel

Electric and magnetic fields, one free-space speed, the radio horizon, multipath, and the propagation paths beyond a first skywave sketch.

Lab workspace

Work through the six stages. This remediation lab fills a gap left by Foundations and Core. Finishing it does not finish the Technician syllabus, and it is not Technician exam readiness.

  2. SEE IT
  3. DO IT
  4. EXPLAIN IT
  5. EXAM CONNECTION
  6. FIELD TASK
  7. ONE MORE CHECK

Stage 1 of 7

LEARN

Lab 07 showed line of sight, terrain, and a first skywave picture. This lab is the wave itself and the other paths a Technician is expected to recognize. Every picture is an educational model, not a forecast.

Stage 2 of 7

SEE IT

Raise an antenna and watch a classroom horizon. Then move a vehicle and watch the signal flutter before you learn the name.

Stage 3 of 7

DO IT

Separate absorption from a returned wave. Sketch HF against VHF. Then match the special paths: sporadic E, meteor scatter, aurora, tropospheric ducting, and a ridge that still leaks a signal.

Stage 4 of 7

EXPLAIN IT

Why can two stations using the same power and frequency have very different results at different times or locations?

Stage 5 of 7

EXAM CONNECTION

Radio Lab practice. These items use the models you just ran. They are not official exam questions.

Stage 6 of 7

FIELD TASK

Propagation investigation. Each note has a place, a band, and what the operator heard. Pick the concept this lab taught. You are not forecasting tomorrow.

Stage 7 of 7

ONE MORE CHECK

Polarization matching is already in the course. These two conventions are additional.
