Modes, Satellites & Digital Activities

Mode bandwidth, upper and lower sideband, digital activities, fast-scan television, and a low-Earth-orbit pass.

Lab workspace

Work through the six stages. This remediation lab fills a gap left by Foundations and Core. Finishing it does not finish the Technician syllabus, and it is not Technician exam readiness.

Stage 1 of 7

LEARN

TC-05 introduced modes. This bench is the widths, the sideband convention, and the activities those modes are used for. A mode is how the information rides on the radio wave, and how much spectrum that ride occupies.

Stage 2 of 7

SEE IT

Digital activities exchange structured information. A television picture is still a radio emission with a very wide footprint. A low-Earth-orbit satellite is only available while it is in view.

Stage 3 of 7

DO IT

Pick the activity that fits the goal. None of these is required to hold a license. FM is the usual voice mode on VHF and UHF repeaters, and it is also common for VHF packet. SSB is the weak-signal voice choice and uses less spectrum than FM. SSB is a form of amplitude modulation. CW is on-off keying and is the narrowest of the modes on the bench.

Stage 4 of 7

EXPLAIN IT

Why isn't choosing a radio mode only a matter of deciding whether you want voice or data?

Stage 5 of 7

EXAM CONNECTION

Radio Lab practice from this bench. Not the official pool.

Stage 6 of 7

FIELD TASK

You are on a hill with a dual-band handheld, a notebook of satellite passes, and an hour. One goal is a local voice contact. Another is a weak digital contact. A LEO satellite is due in twenty minutes.

Stage 7 of 7

ONE MORE CHECK

The pass you already ran did not include rotation, the published mode, or how to set uplink power.
