Antennas, Feed Lines & Connectors

Named antennas, a dipole pattern model, loading, feed-line loss, connectors, the tuner, and SWR.

Lab workspace

Work through the six stages. This remediation lab fills a gap left by Foundations and Core. Finishing it does not finish the Technician syllabus, and it is not Technician exam readiness.

Stage 1 of 6

LEARN

Lab 06 and TC-06 already used a wire, a match, and coax. This bench names the antennas, the pattern, and the loading coil those labs left thin.

Stage 2 of 6

SEE IT

Turn the dipole and watch the teaching pattern. Then shorten an antenna and see what the coil is doing.

Stage 3 of 6

DO IT

Coax is the usual feed line because the shield keeps the field inside and the cable is easy to route. Most amateur coax is about 50 ohms. Loss rises with frequency. An antenna tuner matches what the transmitter sees. It does not retune the antenna itself.

Stage 4 of 6

EXPLAIN IT

Why can two feed lines connected to the same antenna deliver different amounts of transmitter power to the antenna?

Stage 5 of 6

EXAM CONNECTION

Radio Lab practice. Not the official pool.

Stage 6 of 6

FIELD TASK

A picnic on 2 meters. You have a handheld with a rubber duck, a mag-mount quarter-wave for the car, 3 meters of RG-58, 20 meters of RG-213, a PL-259, and an N connector. The table is far from the car. The radio is FM voice.
